Why sell tickets tied to a specific seat

Entertainment events most often - concerts, theater performances, stand-up shows and the like - have clear seating by rows and seat numbers. Open-air festivals, on the other hand, usually do not need this. They may be divided into zones with different ticket prices, or have a separate ticket for each zone, but it all depends on the organizer's imagination.
